The smear layer - first described in 1975, it is a layer of impurities created after chemo-mechanical treatment of the root canal.
Consists of:
* organic and inorganic material,
* dentine residues,
* odontoblast fiber residues,
* living or dead pulp tissue,
* microorganisms
